The barriers consist of a highly reflective material that reflects radiant heat rather than absorbing it. A radiant barrier reduces the radiant heat transfer from the underside of the roof to the other surfaces in the attic, which will then infiltrate your home. Radiant barriers are more effective in hot climates than in cool climates, especially when cooling air ducts are located in the attic.

Radiant barriers come in a variety of forms, including reflective foil, reflective metal roof shingles, reflective laminated roof sheathing, and even reflective chips, which can be applied over loose-fill insulation. Radiant barriers differ from other types of insulation, and have a different intended objective. Where fiberglass and blown-in insulation prohibit the transfer of heat through convection and conduction, a radiant barrier prohibits the third way heat can move, radiation.

A radiant barrier is reflective material layered into your roof that reflects the radiant energy of the sun away from your home, and is generally installed on the underside of the roof deck. The attic is the area where the most radiant heat enters your house, and a barrier prevents most of it from getting through: around 90% of the heat is deflected away so that your home is not a magnet for heat absorption!

Radiation describes heat moving through electromagnetic waves, coming from a hot object and traveling until contacting another object. You feel radiant heat coming from asphalt on a hot day, and from the sun shining down on you when there are no clouds in the sky.
